Chevrolet Equinox EV became the bestselling non-Tesla EV ever in July

Putting EV Hiccups In The Rearview Mirror

General Motors’ rollout of its current-generation EVs got off to a rough start, with numerous issues in ramping up production. But the automaker seems to be putting those troubles behind it as it achieves record EV sales.

GM said Monday in a press release that it hit a monthly United States electric-vehicle sales record in July, selling more than 19,000 EVs in the month. That’s a 115% year-over-year increase, one that was led by the Chevrolet Equinox EV, which had its best sales month ever. With more than 8,500 of the compact crossovers sold in July, GM claims the Equinox EV became the bestselling non-Tesla EV in the U.S.

The Equinox EV accounted for about 45% of GM’s July EV sales, with the rest split among nine other models. About 36,000 Equinox EVs were sold in the first half of 2025, already beating last year’s total.

Affordability Appeals

Chevrolet

A big part of the Equinox EV’s appeal is likely its value proposition. With the Bolt EV on hiatus, the Equinox EV is the least-expensive electric model in GM’s U.S. lineup. It currently starts at $34,995 in base front-wheel drive form, and that base model offers an EPA-rated 319 miles of range and enough standard equipment to make browsing the options list unnecessary.

For now, the Equinox EV also qualifies for a $7,500 federal EV tax credit, but that’s due to end on September 30 under the budget bill championed by President Donald Trump and passed by the Republican-controlled Congress.

Front-wheel drive models have a single electric motor generating 220 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. The Equinox EV launched as a 2024 model in pricier all-wheel drive form, and this dual-motor powertrain is still available with 300 hp and 355 lb-ft of torque. All models have an 85-kilowatt-hour battery pack that makes the Equinox EV’s relatively DC fast-charging power rate of 150 kilowatts reasonable for real-world use. And Chevy offers a 19.2-kW onboard charger for AC charging (an 11.5-kW unit is standard).

Other EV Bright Spots For GM

Chevrolet

The Equinox EV wasn’t the only piece of encouraging news for GM’s EV bet in the automaker’s second-quarter sales results. GM said its overall EV sales were up over 100% in Q2, with GMC EV sales up 34% and Cadillac having its best-ever first half for EV sales. Nearly one in four Cadillacs sold in the first half were EVs, and in the second quarter Cadillac had the highest EV market share among luxury brands, GM claims.

This success is partly due to growing overall U.S. EV sales. GM estimated that EVs would increase to 8.5% of the market in July, although the automaker claims its own EV sales are growing faster than the industry average. The Equinox EV will also soon be joined by a new Bolt EV, giving GM another affordable model that will hopefully help it weather the collapse of pro-EV policy at the federal level.

Tesla Loyalty Collapses After Musk Endorses Trump

Tesla’s once-dominant brand loyalty has taken a nosedive — and the drop isn’t just steep, it’s historic. According to new data from S&P Global Mobility, Tesla retention fell from 73% in June 2024 to just 49.9% by March 2025, following CEO Elon Musk’s public endorsement of Donald Trump after an assassination attempt last summer. It was the first time in the company’s history that loyalty dipped below the industry average.

The collapse has since corrected slightly, reaching 57.4% by May 2025, but that’s still miles off the highs that once made Tesla the most magnetic brand in the EV space.

Political Fallout Meets Sales Reality

Musk’s political turn alienated many of Tesla’s early, left-leaning buyers, and with fresh competition piling in from all directions, they’re not exactly short on alternatives. The backlash was visible not just in press coverage and social media — but in the numbers. July brought more bad news from Europe, where Tesla sales fell dramatically in France, Denmark, and Sweden for a seventh consecutive month. In Sweden, sales dropped a staggering 85.8% year-over-year.

The brand is also struggling to sustain U.S. interest, where the ageing Model S and Model X have gone years without meaningful overhauls. Even the rumoured budget Model Y, reportedly stripped of features to meet a lower price point, has sparked concern rather than confidence.

The loyalty freefall coincided with an equally dramatic narrative shift: Tesla has gone from cultural disruptor to political flashpoint. This time last year, it was adding five new owner households for every one it lost. By early 2025, that ratio had halved.

Board Confidence Remains, But Consumers Are Wary

Despite the backlash, Tesla’s board is standing by its CEO. Just yesterday, the company awarded Musk a $29 billion stock grant to retain him through 2027 — effectively reviving a controversial pay package that had been struck down by the courts.

Investors may still believe in Musk’s vision for autonomy, AI, and next-gen mobility. But for consumers, the brand’s image is more fragile than ever. Grassroots protest groups like “Tesla Takedown” have sprung up in the U.S. and Europe, criticising the company’s political posturing and ethical blind spots. There have been reports of vandalism, boycotts, and showroom disruptions — all of which have dented the brand’s public image.

What’s Next For Tesla?

For now, the brand is holding onto a slim majority of repeat buyers, but the trajectory is unmistakable. Tesla once wrote the playbook on EV dominance. Now it’s playing catch-up on both technology and public trust. Analysts say the path to recovery lies not in politics, but in product: meaningful updates, new entries, and a renewed focus on reliability and value.

Musk still has the keys. But whether drivers want to go along for the ride — that’s another question entirely.

IIHS Study Reveals Significant Way Some 1990s Cars Were Safer

Some SUVs’ forward blind zones have gotten especially large in recent years, study finds

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center has found that the forward blind zones of six top-selling passenger vehicles have grown significantly over the past 25 years, coinciding with increased pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities. A new, IIHS-developed comparison measurement technique used for determining a driver’s direct area of vision around the vehicle facilitated the study’s findings, as first reported by Carscoops.

Researchers highlighted that throughout vehicle redesign cycles from 1997 to 2023, forward visibility within a 10-meter radius declined up to 58% for three popular SUVs: the Honda CR-V, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Chevrolet Suburban. The most considerable reduction came from the CR-V, where the model’s hood, mirrors, and A-pillars all contributed to increased obstruction. Drivers of a 1997 CR-V could see 68% of an area 10 meters ahead of the vehicle, but this figure declined exponentially to 28% for the 2022 version. Regarding the Suburban, drivers of the 2000 model year could see 56% of the area in front, but this declined to 28% for the 2023 production year. A higher hood and larger side mirrors were the two factors most significantly contributing to visibility reductions, and numbers for the Jeep Grand Cherokee weren’t cited.

1997 Honda CR-V

Honda

Researchers also tested the Ford F-150, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry. A 1997 F-150 was reported as providing 43% visibility of a forward area within a 10-meter radius before dropping to 36% by the 2015 production year. Visibility declines in the two tested passenger cars weren’t as noticeable. The Camry had 61% visibility for its 2007 model year before falling to 57% in 2023, and the Accord fared slightly better with 65% visibility for 2003 and 60% for 2023. IIHS President David Harkey said, “The across-the-board decrease in visibility for this small group of models is concerning. We need to investigate whether this is a broader trend that may have contributed to the recent spike in pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities. This study also illustrates that the new method developed by IIHS gives researchers a straightforward, repeatable way to assess driver visibility.”

How the IIHS’s new forward blind zone measurement technique differs from past methods

The IIHS’s updated method for measuring driver visibility uses computational software and a portable camera rig in the driver’s seat at varied heights to illustrate drivers of different sizes. This camera captures a 360-degree image of the vehicle’s surrounding field and the nearest points on the ground that a driver can see, providing a visibility percentage. The previous, less-efficient and more time-consuming method of determining driver visibility didn’t foster opportunities for large-scale studies since researchers had to compare different models’ blind zones with engineering drawings or by positioning each vehicle in an open area marked with grid lines or traffic cones. Another technique using lasers was more efficient, but couldn’t capture blind zones from the side mirrors and the widening base of the A-pillars.

Final thoughts

Volpe Center researchers focused on studying the visibility of vehicles from the 1997 to 2023 model years, as pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities have increased by 37% and 42%, respectively, during this period, according to the IIHS. Researchers also chose to study a 10-meter radius of its test vehicles because that’s the average stopping distance at 10 mph. IIHS Senior Research Engineer Becky Mueller added that the collected data is especially relevant since SUVs have gotten increasingly popular in recent years.

10 Things to Know About Maserati’s New MCPURA

Maserati takes another step forward with the MCPURA

Maserati has unveiled the next stage of the MC20’s evolution—the MCPURA and Cielo (spyder) MCPURA. The new model, set to make its North American debut during the 2026 production year, was created to celebrate Maserati’s 1925 birth of its logo design, with each of the trident’s three prongs representing luxury, performance, and Italian craftsmanship. The powertrain features a 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 621 horsepower and 538.4 lb-ft of torque, which translates to a 0-60 mph time of less than 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 202 mph in the coupé version. Cielo MCPURA offers an equivalent 0-60 mph time and a slightly lower top speed of 199 mph. Drivers also receive an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, 245mm-wide tires designed to fit 20-inch wheels, which contain a double-spoke pairing interpreting Maserati’s A6 GTS made between 1947 and 1956.

The vehicle features a lightweight design, with a dry weight of 3,083 lbs for the coupé and 3,566 lbs for the Cielo MCPURA, utilizing a carbon fiber and composite material shell. The Spyder version features a retractable glass roof and a different arrangement of carbon fiber to help balance the coupé’s weight. In both variants, owners receive a suspension button for increased rigidity and five drive modes: WET, GT, SPORT, CORSA, and ESC OFF. WET mode helps prevent skidding during acceleration and cornering on wet/damp road surfaces, SPORT is ideal for the track, and CORSA lowers traction control while maximizing stability and offering a launch feature. ESC OFF disables all control functions, and GT is the default mode.

What’s new with the MCPURA

MCPURA differs from previous evolutions of the MC20 Halo Car with quicker ignitions, extensive use of two-tone Alcantara, and a new steering wheel. This steering wheel is available in a flat-top/flat-bottom design or a carbon fiber version with integrated shift lights. Newly implemented Alcantara on areas like the instrument panel reduces glare, and separate sections of the interior now featuring Alcantara consist of the seats, door panels, dashboard, and steering wheel components. Alcantara is especially beneficial in sports car seats and steering wheels with its ability to prevent slippage, enhance grip, and reduce discomfort associated with sweating through breathability—all of which support high-intensity driving.

During a reveal event, the model’s head of design noted that MCPURA features a sharper and cleaner rear fascia, which helps reinforce its ethos of restrained and purposeful elegance, along with a sharknose effect derived from single-seater racers. A GT2 Stradale-inspired rear bumper is standard, and buyers can add an optional oversized spoiler. The coupé sports opaque coloring, while the convertible distinguishes itself with a gloss finish. An expanded color palette with three new shades will become available, and the complete color range includes Devil Orange, Grigio Incognito, Grigio Mistero, Nero Essenza, Bianco Audace, Blu Infinito, Rosso Vincente, Giallo Genio, Verde Royale, and Night Interaction.

Final thoughts

Maserati’s MCPURA is an example of how a supercar can stand out from the crowd without yelling through restrained elegance. All MCPURAs will be manufactured in Modena, Italy, with North American orders commencing on July 11. North American production is set to launch during Q3, and cars are expected to arrive on the ground in December. Pricing will be confirmed once sales begin.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Announces 18 New Models By The End Of 2027

Mercedes Has Big Plans To Overcome Rivals

In recent times, BMW has been enjoying remarkable sales success, but its compatriot rivals are not performing as well. In fact, BMW has sold twice as many cars as Audi did in the first six months of 2025, and while Mercedes has reported better figures, it’s still only sold 142,000 vehicles in Q1 2025 compared to BMW’s 178,499. In an attempt to close the gap to BMW over the next few years, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius says the period from this year through 2027 will have “probably the most intense amount of launches in a three-year period in the history of our company,” reports Top Gear, with no fewer than 18 new models planned.

18 New Vehicles, But Not As Many New Nameplates

SH Proshots/Autoblog

Mercedes is considering the launch of a gas-powered vehicle as a separate thing from the launch of an EV with the same name, so the CLA EV counts as one launch and the hybrid CLA as another. Similarly, the upcoming combustion-powered CLA Shooting Brake is a new launch separate from the EV that has already been released. Mercedes reportedly intends to add one more ‘entry-level’ combustion car in 2026, alongside two electric cars.

One tier above these cars are the ‘core’ Merc models, which will welcome two combustion vehicles and two EVs next year. One of these will be the new all-electric GLC that was recently teased and will be revealed at the Munich auto show (IAA) in September. As TG notes, the current C-Class was launched around the same time as the GLC, in 2021, so it’s likely that a facelift of the sedan will be unveiled before long.

Major Changes Coming To The Top Tier Of Mercedes Models

Mercedes-Benz

“Most of the customers at the top end today still choose the Swiss watch of cars with a combustion engine, but it’s not going to stop our push to electrification,” Källenius said. “By the end of this decade, for all relevant Mercedes-Benz models, there will be the choice of an electric powertrain for customers.” This mirrors earlier comments from the company that revealed the EQS would disappear to be reborn simply as an S-Class EV with similar styling to the traditional model. As we’ve noted before, BMW’s decision to make EVs like the i4, i5, and i7 look nearly identical to their combustion-powered 4 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series siblings appears to be paying dividends. At the same time, Mercedes will continue developing internal combustion powertrains.

“Five years ago, we would have been estimating that we would be further along in the journey to electrification by now,” the CEO said. “We will have both ICE and EV for minimum the next 10 years. You cannot let your high-tech combustion engine side sit still.” Expect new AMG models soon, a new baby G-Class, and the production version of the GTXX concept, which will also spawn an SUV.

In summary, to satisfy both sorts of buyers, Mercedes plans six new combustion cars and six new EVs in the ‘top end’ bracket, two new ICE models and one EV in the ‘core’ lineup, and one new combustion car in the ‘entry level’ segment.

Brabus-tuned Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet turns up for sale

No, It’s Not A Mercedes

German tuner Brabus is primarily known for its modified Mercedes-Benz luxury cars (and the occasional real-estate deal), but the company occasionally dabbles in other brands, as evidenced by this modified 2024 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet that’s currently up for sale on Bring a Trailer. The current bid is $330,000, and there are 6 days left before the auction ends.

This 992 Turbo S has the Brabus 820 package, encompassing carbon fiber bodywork, mechanical upgrades courtesy of the Brabus PowerXtra P38S-820 performance package, and a new interior. The seller claims these represent about $200,000 in upgrades, contributing to an original sale price of $499,998. With six days to go in the auction, the high bid for this 1,600-mile car hadn’t gotten quite that high, though.

Even More Power

The performance package includes a Brabus-specific exhaust system, ECU, and blow-off valves, taking output to 820 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque, increases of 180 hp and 130 lb-ft over the stock output of the Turbo S’ twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter flat-six. Brabus claims this upgrade drops the zero to 60 mph time from 2.7 seconds to 2.5 seconds, and increases the top speed from 205 mph to 211 mph.

Brabus retained the eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transaxle, all-wheel drive system, and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control suspension with front-end lift. The hood, front bumper trim, side skirts, engine cover, front and rear spoilers, and rear diffuser are all carbon fiber under Jet Black Metallic paint. The car also wears center-locking Brabus wheels, sized 21 inches in front and 22 inches in the back, with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

Inside, the Brabus Masterpiece Leather Conversion package (a $66,000 option when new, according to the seller) is perfect for fans of black and red. There’s plenty of carbon-fiber trim in here as well, including on the Brabus-branded steering wheel. The conversion maintains the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system as well.

This low-mileage tuner car represents the current generation of 911 Turbo, but that’s not going to be the case for long. Porsche unveiled a refreshed 911—dubbed 992.2—for the 2025 model year with hybrid powertrains, but the automaker kept the 911 Turbo and Turbo S as-is for that model year.

During Porsche’s half-year earnings call, CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that a refreshed 911 Turbo with a hybrid powertrain is on the way. It will be unveiled later this year, meaning it will likely be considered a 2026 model when it reaches the United States. We can’t wait to see what Brabus does with it.

Chevy Hits Home Run At MLB Game Inside Bristol Speedway

Chevrolet made its presence felt in a big way at the inaugural MLB Speedway Classic, a one-of-a-kind baseball spectacle held inside NASCAR’s legendary Bristol Motor Speedway. As the Atlanta Braves took on the Cincinnati Reds in Tennessee’s first-ever Major League Baseball game, Chevy seized the opportunity to blur the lines between two of America’s most iconic sporting obsessions: baseball and motorsport.

For a brand riding high—having recently surpassed Ford as the number two EV maker in the U.S.—the event offered yet another chance to stay top of mind. Chevrolet’s EV momentum, driven by nameplates like the Blazer EV SS, continues to rise—even as models like the Equinox EV face looming price pressure under the revised federal tax credit scheme.

So, where better to flex a bit of cultural muscle than in front of 90,000 baseball fans inside a race track?

When NASCAR Meets MLB

The two-day event took place August 2–3, with Bristol’s half-mile oval transformed into a playable baseball diamond using 124,000 square feet of AstroTurf and over 300 tons of clay and gravel. The Braves took home a 4–2 win in a game interrupted by weather and resumed on Sunday—but the real drama played out off the field.

Chevy had the spotlight throughout. NASCAR drivers Chase Elliott and Ross Chastain took to the track in Braves- and Reds-themed Chevy race cars, giving fans a show before the first pitch. Even Dale Earnhardt Jr. made an appearance, teaming up with Budweiser to showcase a special paint scheme on a classic Chevy stock car.

The stunt wasn’t just a throwback—it was smart marketing. Chevy is leaning heavily into its dual identity: performance heritage and forward-looking EV innovation. It’s the same tension explored in our brutally honest review of the Blazer EV SS, where the brand’s sporty ambitions meet the realities of electric utility.

Game Delays, Hot Dog Disasters, And Branding Wins

Despite a rain delay that suspended Saturday’s game after just four outs, the Sunday resumption drew huge crowds. Braves outfielder Eli White hit two home runs and rookie Hurston Waldrep logged his first MLB win. Behind the scenes, things weren’t as smooth—concessions ran out early, leaving fans with overpriced snacks and no napkins. On Sunday, officials allowed fans to bring their own food. A small fix, but one that highlighted the logistical challenge of hosting baseball in a speedway.

Still, none of that overshadowed the branding win. Chevrolet, already a staple in NASCAR, used the MLB crossover to bring its personality into an entirely new context. By planting itself at the centre of a sport it doesn’t traditionally sponsor, Chevy showed it can speak to more than just car buyers—it can tap into culture.

Chevrolet

Why This Matters

The MLB Speedway Classic was a stunt—but a successful one. With Fox Sports deploying 40 broadcast cameras and delivering immersive coverage, the event reached millions. Chevrolet’s role wasn’t just product placement—it was narrative placement. The company isn’t just building EVs and performance cars; it’s writing itself into the story of what American mobility looks like in 2025.

When that story includes race cars, baseball bats, and roaring crowds in one of NASCAR’s most hallowed arenas? That’s called a home run.

Former GM and Lordstown Motors Factory Intended For EV Production Being Sold Yet Again, This Time By Foxconn

A former GM plant is changing hands again.

Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn, the contract manufacturer known for building notable consumer favorites like the Nintendo Switch game console and the Apple iPhone, is letting go of a prominent U.S. facility. According to an Aug. 4 filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange cited by Automotive News, the aspiring electric vehicle hopeful is selling the former General Motors car factory in Lordstown, Ohio, in a series of transactions that would transfer the sprawling site’s buildings, land, equipment, and machinery to its new owner.

In separate transactions, Crescent Dune LLC has acquired a significant portion of the Lordstown site’s assets for a total of $375 million, which it claims will be channelled into “new business areas.” Per Taiwan stock exchange filings, the site itself, including the land and buildings, was sold for around $88 million, while manufacturing equipment from Foxconn’s EV subsidiaries fetched around $287 million.

Getty Images

According to state records seen by TechCrunch, Crescent Dune is a Delaware-based LLC that is just two weeks old. In a statement, Foxconn spokesperson Matt Dewine told the tech outlet that the buyer of the Lordstown assets is an “existing business partner.”

In a statement to Automotive News, Foxconn said that the Lordstown site is an integral part of the company’s footprint in the United States”, adding that the decision to sell it “is part of the company’s plan to expand into new business areas.” At the same time, they also stated that they plan to continue operations at the Lordstown site and still value the automotive segment: “Foxconn will be involved in the manufacturing of products for customers at the Lordstown facility. The U.S. is a key automotive market, and we are committed to customers and suppliers in this market. Foxconn will be able to rapidly ramp up automotive production to meet customer demand when required.”

Lordstown was once a humming car factory.

Despite this, sources who spoke to The Wall Street Journal said that the Taiwanese electronics company intends to repurpose the EV factory to build cloud computing hardware and server equipment for artificial intelligence (AI) at the site. Already, Foxconn has a manufacturing facility in Houston for AI servers and has partnered with electronics giants like Apple and Nvidia to establish AI-related facilities in the U.S.

The sprawling Lordstown facility was once one of GM’s key assets when it operated from 1966 to 2019. It made everything from Chevrolet’s full-size cars like the Caprice, Impala, Bel Air, and Biscayne to the first-generation Pontiac Firebird, Chevy and GMC vans, and many of Chevrolet’s compact offerings like the Vega, Monza, Cavalier, Cobalt, Cruze, and their badge-engineered variants.

However, its more recent history began in 2019 when Lordstown Motors purchased the facility to manufacture the Lordstown Endurance electric pickup. In 2022, Foxconn acquired the Lordstown facility after the company encountered financial difficulties. Foxconn managed to assemble a small number of electric pickups before Lordstown Motors filed for bankruptcy in June 2023.

Several other startups, including Fisker, considered partnering with Foxconn to manufacture electric vehicles at Lordstown; however, those plans ultimately fell through. Currently, Foxconn is using the Lordstown plant to assemble electric tractors for Monarch, a California-based startup.

Final Thoughts

Foxconn’s Lordstown factory is a crucial asset, as it serves as a domestic production site for automakers seeking to reduce tariffs by manufacturing a larger portion of their vehicles in the United States. In its GM days, it produced nearly 16 million vehicles between 1966 and 2019, peaking at 290,000 cars in 2014. Although the WSJ report indicates that this plant could be converted into a manufacturing facility that produces servers and other cloud computing hardware for AI solutions, a part of me thinks this was a wasted opportunity to possibly onshore a car company that exclusively manufactures overseas. Then again, Foxconn specializes in electronics manufacturing; specifically, the kind you use daily.

Can this modified Ford GT hit 330 mph?

Record Attempt Slated For 2026

When you have a three-mile-long runway to play with, it’s easy to have a need for speed. Johnny Bohmer operates a testing facility on the NASA Shuttle Landing Facility runway at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, and he’s been using the runway to set speed records with a modified 2006 Ford GT for over a decade. He’s about to give it another go.

In 2022, Bohmer reached 310.8 mph, which he claims is a world record for a street-legal car, but felt this “BADD GT” had more in it. So in 2026 he’ll try to break that record—by a significant margin. He said in a press release that he’s targeting a top speed of 330 mph.

“The 310.8 mph/500.1 kph run was just a test run,” Bohmer said in a statement, adding that 330 mph “is in reach, and we are making final preparations.”

Faster Than New Supercars

Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds, LLC

View the 4 images of this gallery on the
original article

Bohmer bought his GT new and has been tinkering with it ever since. In 2012, he reached 283 mph on the Shuttle Landing Facility runway, then came back in 2017 and did a 292-mph run. For that run and the 2022 run in which Bohmer broke the 300-mph barrier, the GT was making 2,700 horsepower, according to Jalopnik.

The release didn’t discuss the car’s current spec, but emphasized that it remains street legal in Florida, and that Bohmer regularly drives it around on public roads in the Sunshine State. And while the interior is fully caged and packed with data-logging gear, it also retains air conditioning (obligatory in Florida), cup holders, and an audio system.

The BADD GT is already in elite company. It’s faster than the Hennessey Venom F5, which achieved 270.4 mph on the same runway in 2014 (Hennessey hopes to break 300 mph in the near future), and the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, the only production car to record a speed higher than 300 mph in testing.

How Much Faster?

This Ford looks even more impressive considering that the Chiron isn’t considered the world’s fastest production car by the FIA. Bugatti only surpassed 300 mph in one direction, and FIA rules (along with those of most governing bodies for land-speed records) require a return run, with speeds from the two runs averaged.

By that metric, the Koenigsegg Agera RS is the fastest, with a verified top speed of 277.8 mph. Koenigsegg believes its Jesko can surpass 300 mph, and Bugatti has made similar claims about its Bolide track car, but neither has done it yet.

Dealer Got Lamborghini’s $4M Bonus While Selling To Ghosts

Lamborghini is known for speed, drama, and exclusivity. And now, just like another Italian exotic carmaker, it’s adding a lawsuit to the list. In North America, Lamborghini isn’t allowed to sell directly to customers, so it relies on independent dealerships to handle new vehicle sales. One of those dealers, Gold Coast Exotic Imports in Chicago, is now at the center of a messy legal battle. The automaker has accused the dealership of flipping cars to unauthorized brokers, collecting secret payments, and misleading the brand about who was actually buying vehicles like the $600,000+ Lamborghini Revuelto.

Mystery Buyers

Lamborghini

According to the lawsuit, Gold Coast allegedly sold at least 32 cars in 2023 to buyers who weren’t who they claimed to be. One vehicle was supposedly purchased by a Minnesota chiropractor, another by a former pro athlete. In reality, the cars were sent to third-party brokers, including someone who had previously pleaded guilty to laundering money through luxury vehicles. Not your average retail customer. Lamborghini says these sales were disguised to appear legitimate, even though the buyers should never have had access to the cars in the first place.

Kickbacks, Bonuses, and Finger-Pointing

Lamborghini

The automaker also claims Gold Coast demanded under-the-table payments — sometimes as high as $150,000 — from customers hoping to jump the line for limited-edition models like the Sterrato. Meanwhile, Lamborghini was unknowingly rewarding the dealership with more than $4 million in performance-based bonuses. Gold Coast denies the allegations. It argues that Lamborghini is actually the one at fault, pointing to over $400,000 in unpaid reimbursements for showroom upgrades and marketing. The dealership also claims the lawsuit is a thinly veiled attempt to push out its 81-year-old president, Joseph Perillo Sr., who Lamborghini allegedly described as “too old” and “too difficult to deal with.”

The Future Of Exotic Car Sales

Lamborghini

This case touches a nerve in the exotic car world. Genuine buyers already face inflated prices and long waitlists, especially if the brand you’re buying from rhymes with Merrari or Borche. If dealers are making backroom deals with resellers, it doesn’t just feel unfair. It hurts the brand. Lamborghini’s decision to sue one of its own dealers is bold and could reshape how automakers handle flipping going forward. Settlement talks are ongoing, but if they fall apart, the case is set to go to trial in December 2026. Either way, this fight is giving everyone a peek at how some exclusive cars are really sold.
